All About Turmeric

Three things should come to mind when you hear the word “Turmeric:” anti-inflammatory, bright orange and golden milk latte. At least those are the three things I think of! Let’s dive a little deeper into the wonderful bright orange world of Turmeric!

Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) is a root (rhizome) and is a member of the ginger family. It has a beautifully bright orange colour and an astringent flavour. Turmeric has been a staple spice in Indian and Asian cooking. It has medicinal properties as an antibiotic and it is an excellent anti-inflammatory herb!

Turmeric is the root as a whole while Curcumin is a curcuminoid polyphenol found in turmeric. In short, curcumin is the most active form found in turmeric.

Turmeric helps prevent inflammation by lowering the level of messaging molecules that trigger the inflammation. It also lowers levels of nitric oxide and helps increase bile flow; overall helping to boost the immune system and support liver health.

Cooking Use: Add it in your veggies, soups, sauces, dressings, juice, hot drink, chocolate, really…the sky is the limit with this golden spice!

I personally love adding it in my quinoa, dressing and of course, the ever popular Golden Milk Latte. If you don’t want to make it from scratch, I have found that Botanica Golden Milk has been the best tasting and super easy to make.

Medicinal Use: anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antibiotic, arthritis, detoxifier, indigestion

With my chronic neck, lower back, right leg and foot pain, I have tried many turmeric supplements. These are my top three recommendations for supplementation as I have found them to be the most effective from my own experience.

For those suffering from chronic pain, I also highly recommend Zyflamend by New Chapter. It is a whole body pain reliever. I can’t go a day without this too! (And when I tried going without it, I felt more pain). It also has Turmeric in it but I take this in addition to a double dose of turmeric supplement.

Please consult a healthcare practitioner to help you find the right dosing for you! I am just sharing what I do to keep my pain manageable so I can live my day to day life. I hope this has helped you! If  you have any questions at all, please feel free to email me at
